Over 30 years ago, Paramount Pictures grabbed Clue off the shelf and turned the Parker Brothers board game into a cult comedy starring Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Eileen Brennan, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, and Lesley Ann Warren. John Landis wrote the screenplay. It was hilarious. You can find it every so often on Comedy Central.
Now, 20th Century Fox wants to roll the dice with a new remake, one that would expand the scandalous murder mystery into a globe-trotting, multi-film franchise with action-adventure elements. Because, despite the dismal returns at the box office over the last year, Hollywood studios still feel compelled to green light projects with a lengthy, unnecessary future.
Originally, The Ring director Gore Verbinski was attached to direct, back when producers mulled the project in 2011, but it’s unclear whether he’s still on board. The filmmaker’s latest feature, the German-American supernatural horror thriller A Cure for Wellness, doesn’t hit theaters until next February, leaving his slate wide open. Maybe he’ll try to pin it all on Colonel Mustard.
Whatever happens, I’m gonna go home and sleep with my wife.
